What CoFoundersLab is

CoFoundersLab launched in November 2011 out of The Fort, an accelerator in Washington, DC, and grew in 2012 by buying two smaller founder-matching sites, according to TechCrunch. It was bought by new owners in 2018, as dot.LA reported. Today it works as a membership site: you create a profile, search other members and message them. Its pricing page marks searching, direct messages and video chat as limited on the free plan, and Premium lifts those limits.

What Foundinity is

Foundinity is a cofounder matching platform built around the question most cofounder searches leave until too late: will the two of you work well together, for years? It doesn't hand you a directory. You state what you need in a cofounder, take an assessment about how you work, and see people ranked by compatibility. Every match comes with a breakdown of where you align and where you differ, and a 10-day clock so the conversation actually happens.

How each one works, step by step

On Foundinity

1. Sign up and say what you need in a cofounder. 2. Take the assessment about how you work. It covers commitment, working style, ambition, personality, goals and values, alongside your skills and interests. 3. Open the app to people ranked by compatibility. 4. Like the people you want to meet. When the like is mutual, it's a match. 5. Read the compatibility breakdown, then book the intro call in the app before the 10-day clock runs out.

On CoFoundersLab

1. Create a profile with your skills, interests and location. 2. Search member profiles. On the free plan, searching is limited. 3. Message the people who look right. Direct messages are limited on the free plan too. 4. Wait for replies, arrange calls yourself, and work out on those calls whether you'd work well together.

The difference shows up in step 4. On CoFoundersLab, finding out about fit is the whole job, and you do it one call at a time. On Foundinity, some of that work is done before you meet.

How you find people

On CoFoundersLab you search. You look through member profiles, narrow them down by skill and location, and message the people who look right. The work of deciding who's worth a call is yours, and the profile is all you have to go on. A 2022 review on Medium by a founder who used both CoFoundersLab and YC's platform said the free tier capped how many searches you could run each week, and that results included profiles nobody seemed to use anymore.

Foundinity starts from the other end. You state what you need in a cofounder, and answer an assessment about how you work: commitment, working style, ambition, personality, goals, values, alongside your skills and interests. A multi-trait algorithm built on established psychological compatibility models ranks the people you see. You open the app to compatible people, instead of a search box and hundreds of random profiles.

What you know before the first call

A CoFoundersLab profile tells you what someone can do. It doesn't tell you how they handle a slow month, how many hours they'll really put in, or whether they want a lifestyle business while you want to raise money. You find that out on calls, one person at a time.

On Foundinity, every match comes with a compatibility breakdown that shows where the two of you align and where you differ. If you differ on commitment, you know to ask about it in the first ten minutes. Skills tell you who can do the job. The rest tells you who you can actually build with for years.

After you connect

When two people like each other on Foundinity, it's a match, and a 10-day clock starts. That keeps a match from sitting unanswered for weeks. You book the intro call inside the app, with Google Calendar, instead of trading times over email.

CoFoundersLab gives you messaging. What happens next, and how fast, depends on the other person. One Trustpilot review from October 2026 says connection requests seemed to go nowhere.

Privacy and who you're talking to

CoFoundersLab's privacy policy says your profile is "fully visible to all Members and customers of our Services." If you're still employed and don't want your search to be public, that matters. Its terms also say it doesn't "warrant the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness" of information on the site, and they don't describe any checks on members.

Foundinity doesn't share your profile publicly. Only members who are compatible with you can see it, and you can set your status to exploring if you want to look around before you commit to anything.

How to check someone you meet online

Wherever you meet a potential cofounder, a few checks protect your time and your idea:

  • Look them up outside the platform. A real work history leaves traces: a LinkedIn profile with connections, a GitHub account, a company website, people who have worked with them.
  • Get on a video call early. Someone who keeps finding reasons not to talk face to face is a warning sign.
  • Ask what they've built, then check it. If they say they shipped an app, ask for the link.
  • Do a small project together before you commit. A two-week trial on something real tells you more than five calls.
  • Never send money. No real cofounder asks for a fee to get started.

For what to ask on those first calls, see our questions to ask a potential cofounder.

Cost and billing

Foundinity is free to get started: 5 likes a week, up to 3 active matches and up to 3 profile saves. Plus costs $5 a week or $15 a month (₹300 or ₹1,000 in India) and adds 15 likes a week, unlimited active matches, a list of everyone who liked you and up to 5 profile saves. The weekly option means you can pay for one busy week and stop.

CoFoundersLab's Premium is $29 a month, and it starts with a 30-day free trial. Its terms say that after the trial "you consent to automatic payments", that it may keep billing your card "even after it has expired", and that to avoid future charges you need to "cancel before the renewal date." Billing and cancelling are among the most common complaints in its reviews. A July 2025 thread on r/Entrepreneur was titled "Shady subscription billing by Cofunders lab, refuses to cancel trial, keeps charging my card".

How to avoid surprise charges on CoFoundersLab

If you start the Premium trial, treat day 30 as a deadline:

  • Put a reminder in your calendar for a few days before the trial ends.
  • Cancel before the renewal date, as the terms require, and keep the confirmation email.
  • Don't rely on an expired card to stop payments: the terms say CoFoundersLab may keep billing a card after it has expired.
  • Check your statement the following month. If you're charged after cancelling, contact the company first and your card issuer if that doesn't work.

On Foundinity you choose a weekly or monthly Plus plan, and you can stay on the free plan for as long as you like.

What CoFoundersLab members say

On Trustpilot, CoFoundersLab has a TrustScore of 1.3 from 107 reviews, and 94% of them are one star (checked 8 November 2026). The profile is unclaimed, and the company doesn't invite reviews, so treat the sample as small. The complaints repeat, though: marketing emails that keep coming after you unsubscribe, profiles that look fake, connection requests that go nowhere, trouble cancelling, and support that doesn't reply.

The Better Business Bureau lists CoFoundersLab as not accredited, with 21 complaints in the last three years and 8 in the last 12 months (checked 8 November 2026).

Which one fits your situation

You're employed and want to search quietly. Foundinity shows your profile only to compatible members, and the exploring status lets you look without committing. On CoFoundersLab, your profile is visible to every member and customer.

You're non-technical and need a technical cofounder. Engineers are in demand everywhere: on YC's platform in 2021, 80% of founders who didn't do engineering wanted a cofounder who did. On Foundinity, the developers you see are ranked by compatibility on multiple dimensions around who you are and how you work, so your likes go to people who fit more than the job title. Our guide on how to find a technical cofounder covers the rest of the search.

A past cofounder lost interest after a couple of months. Commitment is part of the Foundinity assessment, and the compatibility breakdown shows where you differ on it before the first call. A CoFoundersLab profile won't tell you that.

You're on a tight budget. Foundinity is free to get started, and Plus has a $5 weekly option. CoFoundersLab Premium is $29 a month once the trial ends.

You've been talking to people for months without a decision. The 10-day clock on every Foundinity match pushes each conversation to a call or a clear no. Our post on how long it takes to find a cofounder has more on keeping a search moving.

Which should you use?

If you want to see who you'd work well with before you spend evenings on calls, use Foundinity. The ranking does the first sort, the breakdown gives the first call an agenda, and the 10-day clock keeps each match moving.

CoFoundersLab leaves the search, the judging and the follow-up to you. If you try it anyway, set a reminder before the 30-day trial ends, look people up outside the site, and get on a video call early.
